Keep Your Pool Crystal Clear: Your July Pool Maintenance Checklist

Pool Maintenance Tips

July Pool Check List - Jersey Chemicals

Summer is in full swing in North Jersey, and your backyard pool should be the sparkling centerpiece of your home. But with high temps, backyard BBQs, and frequent use, July is also when pools are most vulnerable to cloudy water, algae, and chemical imbalance.

Don’t worry! Jersey Chemicals has you covered. Follow this July Pool Maintenance Checklist to keep your water clean, clear, and swim-ready all month long.

July Pool Checklist - Jersey Chemicals New Jersey

1. Test Your Water 2–3 Times per Week

Warm weather and heavy pool use can throw your water chemistry off quickly. Regular testing helps you stay ahead of problems.

Target Levels:

  • Chlorine: 1–3 ppm
  • pH: 7.2–7.6
  • Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30–50 ppm

💡 Tip: Bring a water sample to Jersey Chemicals—we offer free in-store water testing and expert advice on what your pool needs.

2. Shock Weekly (or After Heavy Use)

The 4th of July party? Big weekend swim session? Shock your pool to kill bacteria and break down contaminants like sweat, sunscreen, and leaves.

  • Use calcium hypochlorite or non-chlorine shock, depending on your setup.
  • Shock at dusk and run the pump overnight for best results.

3. Keep Your Filter Clean

A dirty or clogged filter can’t circulate water properly, leading to algae and cloudy water.

  • Backwash sand or DE filters weekly
  • Rinse or replace cartridge filters as needed
  • Run your pool pump at least 8–12 hours a day in July

4. Add Algaecide as a Preventative

Even if you don’t see algae, it may be lurking in corners or pipes.
Adding a weekly dose of algaecide helps prevent green or yellow outbreaks.

🎯 Shop our full selection of algaecides, clarifiers, and phosphate removers in-store.

5. Monitor Chlorine Demand in Heatwaves

North Jersey summers can be hot and humid, great for swimming, but tough on chlorine. UV rays and high temperatures cause chlorine to burn off faster.

  • Use a chlorine stabilizer (CYA) to protect your chlorine from sun degradation.
  • Increase your chlorination schedule during back-to-back hot days.

6. Skim and Vacuum Regularly

Keep your pool looking good and your chemicals working efficiently by removing debris regularly.

  • Skim daily for leaves, bugs, and pollen
  • Brush walls and steps weekly
  • Vacuum or use a robotic cleaner every few days

7. Check Your Supply of Essentials

Avoid the mid-July rush and empty shelves. Keep these pool must-haves on hand:
